Dr. Doug’s Key Book Summaries and Answers from The #140edu Conference in NYC

What do you believe has to happen to improve the current education model?

  • Students should be allowed to work at their own pace and finish when they finish. Arbitrary quantities of content that must be digested by everyone by the end of the school year frustrates some and bores others. There is no need to fail students. Just give them as much time as they need and move them on when they are ready for the next thing. Use student projects for exit requirements when possible. Judge schools by these criteria and ditch standardized tests and grades. The Boy Scout merit badge/eagle scout model is better than what we see in schools. Kids choose projects based on interest and work at their own pace. When they finish they all get the same badge not a grade. Online components should have a place along with collaboration and community involvement. Where tests make sense, let students take them as many times as they need to until they demonstrate mastery, not just passing. Also, all tests should be open-phone.
