Leading School Change: 9 Strategies to Bring Everybody on Board

5. Reduce the Resistance

  • While you may want to stay away from resistance at first, you can’t ignore it. There will always be whiners in our midst. A key is to not be manipulated by their behavior. Treat all the naysayers as individuals and work on them one at a time. Start with the one who is least resistant. Weaken the leader by reducing the followers. Look for opportunities to keep the naysayers busy doing something less important. At meetings try to arrange seating so negative people are not clustered and do the same with scheduling. If you have a male cluster, look for a member who has respect to help your cause.
