Avoid Judging, Express Concern, and Summarize

  • People often say judgmental things that they can’t support with data or observations. Facts you can support are likely to be more effective than opinions you can’t. Express concern and work to establish a partnership to address the issue at hand.
  • At the end of the conversation, summarize what was accomplished, what the next steps are, and who will do what to follow up. After summarizing, ask if you have left anything out.
