  • Answer messages within 24 hours. If you can’t give an acceptable reply, let the person know you have the message and are working on it.
  • If you find yourself going back and forth multiple times, you might be better off with a meeting or telephone call.
  • Try to keep messages short and positive.
  • Dr. Doug: Never use electronic communications for any matter that is contentious. Make sure others in your organization know this. You can’t remind people enough. Also tell them not to read between the lines as body language and tone of voice are missing.
