The World Is Open – Curtis Bonk

9. Real-TIme Mobility & Portability

  • With the advent of mobile devices that can surf the Internet, act as a GPS, record video, store prerecorded audio and video, among other things, you can learn anywhere anytime. Leading edge schools are issuing iPhones to all students rather then banning them in class. Children unable to attend class can keep up and communicate with teachers and peers. Students who need extra help can get it suited to their needs. Experiments in Africa and Latin America are giving “pocket schools” to children who otherwise had little or no access to formal education. Corporations are using mobile devices for on-demand, just-in-time training. How close are we to the day when students enter a classroom and take out their smart phones rather than putting them away? Educators need to think of effective ways to use them.
