Improving Your School One Week at a Time – Jeffrey Zoul

What Makes a Good School & Good Teachers

  • On the second Friday, Jeff shares his three key characteristics of great teachers. The first is a command of and passion for the subject matter they teach. If you aren’t excited about what you are teaching, what chances do the students have? Next is deeply caring about each child as an individual. You also have to get to know them, their families, and their interests. (Doug: A focus on student interests can help build intrinsic motivation.) Finally, each teacher must bring something special to their practice. This can be a sense of humor or a unique personality, but you must add your own special flavor. If a school is full of teachers with these characteristics, it is likely to feel like a special place. The staff will also feel that the school really belongs to them.
