Keeping Your Focus

  • Dealing with multiple decisions at the same time can overload your thoughts. It is essential that you learn to compartmentalize so you can focus on each problem. The other main problem to rob you of focus are your emotions. This requires that you decouple your emotions from the matter at hand. Emotions like resentment or jealousy can impede good listening, but the most pernicious negative emotion is treat. Positive emotions can also get in the way. With time and practice you can keep conditions surrounding a problem from interfering with your efforts to compartmentalize and decouple. In some cases you can interrupt a conversation and ask your partner to get back to you later. If you can’t, you just carry on acknowledging to yourself that your focus is reduced.
