What is the Mandate?

• Bernie has several mental categories he uses to organize the information contained in a conversation. The first is the mandate. That is, what is your organization’s basic purpose or essential mission? These are big aspirations, not short-term goals. Listen for clues your conversation partner mentions. You may have to work to get this out and reach agreement on it. Questions like “Why are we hear?” might help. Mandates should capture the imagination of leadership, be communicated broadly, and must be practical.
