Preventing Plagiarism: Tips and Techniques by Laura DeSena

Afterword

  • An essay is a contribution to knowledge, and it should be uniquely the student’s own work. This doesn’t mean that the writer’s understandings cannot be found elsewhere. Students should know that they have the right to discriminate, to reject some scholarly points of view and to embrace others. (Doug: If you can get students to buy into this thinking, you will help them learn how to think for themselves as they shun the idea of simply presenting the ideas and efforts of others as their own. Good luck.)
