Should Educators Talk of The Bar or Your Bar?

  • With current technology, there is no reason why students can’t each take the test they are ready for. They can listen to lectures they are ready for when they are not in the classroom. There is no reason why the lectures have to be recorded by their teacher as the Kahn Academy and TED Talks videos demonstrate. Students can get help from teachers and peers individually or in small groups on the subject matter they are working on when they are in class. As they gain knowledge and skills, they move on to what logically comes next for skill based courses like reading and math. Outside of these areas they can focus on their interests and passion, which teachers can help them discover. This can be done with a mix of individual and group projects. If you must use some arbitrary number to judge teachers, use the amount of gain students make on their skills using tests that are appropriate for each students abilities.
