Students Want Facilitated Learning

  • As their first priority, students want more interactive and engaging activities like discussions, debates, and presentation activities. They understand that individual work is necessary, but prefer activities with more social interaction. They like to demonstrate what they have learned first hand. They would rather find content themselves rather than listen to the teacher drone on. They like to talk about subjects and learn from their friends.
  • They want teachers to ask what they are interested in and make an effort to include their interests in their assignments. They find homework stressful and would rather work on assignments in class. (Doug: This fits in with the flipped classroom concept. See my summary of Flip Your Classroom.)
