The Gamer Generation by Jennifer Wagner

Serious Games

  • Serious games are games that can help groups, societies, or the world at large. Video games can get important messages through to people better than documentaries can. With interaction comes a deeper understanding than merely watching. Games like Evoke let you tackle real problems such as food security, energy, water security, disaster relief, poverty, pandemic, education, and human rights. Planet Hunters is a new citizen science project, designed to engage the public in an exoplanet search. While playing Fold.it, gamers have solved the structure of a retrovirus enzyme whose configuration had stumped scientists. These are just a few of the examples in this chapter.
