The School Mission Statement – My 70th Book Summary

The Purpose of School

  • Philosophers since Aristotle have given their opinions on this matter, but Stemler and Bebell find that research examining school purpose remains strikingly limited. In addition, despite the current educational emphasis on reflection and measurement, remarkably little attention has been paid to the school’s perspective on its actual role and purpose. One of the main purposes of this book is to report on the studies the authors have done to rectify this situation. In addition to cognitive outcomes, economic purposes such as job preparation, social purposes such as the development of social and moral responsibility, and political purposes such as the assimilation of immigrants are often included by state and district purposes.
