The World Is Flat Release 3.0 Summary

Parenting

  • There is clearly a need for improved parenting. There comes a time when a parent has to tell a child to put away the Game Boy, turn off the TV, put away the iPod, and get down to work. (What Friedman may not have seen is the role such devices might play in education.) In July 2004 Bill Cosby upbraided African-Americans for not teaching their children proper grammar and for black kids not striving to learn more. “You can’t be a doctor with that crap coming out of your mouth.” He went on to address squandered opportunities by saying “You’ve got to stop beating your women because you can’t find a job, because you didn’t want to get an education. Jesse Jackson added “let’s fight the right fight. Drunk people can’t do that. Illiterate people can’t do that.”
