The World Is Flat Release 3.0 Summary

Characteristics of Thriving Cultures

  • Successful cultures tend to value hard work, thrift, honesty, patience, tenacity, openness to change, and equality for women. This explains why Muslim countries tend to struggle. In Arab cultures the Quran is not open to criticism or reinterpretation. This causes critical thinking and creativity to whither. As a result, the Arab world is not participating in the flat world. In the 1990’s, Arab countries produced 171 patents while South Korea produced 16,328. Al-Qaeda is an exception as they use the flat world tools of collaboration to deploy terror assets like suicide bombers. They can transmit terror and make small acts seem big.
