Why Social Media Matters: Book Summary

Key Writing Tips

  • There is no point using social media if you don’t use it to hone your writing skills. This chapter is full of excellent tips. Your stakeholders may be inundated with media and messages so yours needs to stand out. Key ideas are to keep it simple, unexpected, concrete, credible, emotional, and do all this while telling good stories. Check your writing to see if it passes this test. Headlines need to catch the eye and your vocabulary needs to pack some punch. Use active verbs rather than passive language. It’s ok to provide data but don’t lead with it or put too much on your home page. Be careful and sparing in judgements. Keep blog posts to one screen and provide links to details for readers who want to know more. Your face-to-face contacts will be limited so be sure to use technology to extend your reach.
