Why Social Media Matters: Book Summary

Crisis Management

  • In a crisis, social media can be an important tool for leaders. You can put out common sense at the speed of light in a crisis. Information is a key currency of power. Things usually happen fast and continue for more than a day. The social media effort needs to continue after things return to normal. If you do short blog and Facebook posts and tweet daily, people will feel up-to-date with minimal effort. The way you dispense information in a crisis will impact your reputation as it offers an opportunity to build trust. If you don’t supply information early and often, someone else will and it may be inaccurate and negative. After the crisis, be sure to communicate your plans as to how you will prevent this type of problem in the future, and evaluate your efforts.
