Hacking Your Education by Dale J. Stephens

Mindset, Learning Styles, and Volunteering

  • Dale reviews research by Carol Dweck that shows how people who are complimented for hard work will perform better than people complimented for being smart. Be sure to read my summary ofMindset by Carol Dweck. He then reviews the four basic learning styles and provides a quiz you can use to determine the learning styles that work best for you. They are visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic. The idea is that if you enjoy learning, you will learn better.
  • Somehow you need to find out what you might be good at and enjoy. Trying something you have never tried before might help. You can also volunteer at various places to get an idea of what a job is all about. this is also a way to get your foot in the door. He also suggests you consider working on your writing skills and/or learning how to compose computer programs. Dale’s website has resources for both.
