Hacking Your Education by Dale J. Stephens

Finding Mentors and Teachers

  • The key advice is that you have to take initiative. One way is to attend lectures and events on college campuses and introduce yourself to the presenters. Get contact information and follow up with email. You can also reach out to people you haven’t met if you get their email. In some cases you can guess it. Dale gives advice on how to write effective short and specific emails. Ideally you can meet for a cup of coffee. If that happens ask the person who else you should contact. When you find someone, ask if you can assist them for free. The idea is to get hired by doing free work. Dale knows a number of people who have done just that. You can also learn from your peers as they learn from you. Dale explains how to set up a learning cooperative for that purpose.
