Career Slams

  • One more way to get a slam is to win all of the majors in your discipline at least once during your career. This is still pretty difficult as a lot of great players fail to punch all four tickets. The great Pete Sampras never won the French open, and Arnold Palmer never won the PGA. Roger Federer may not have won the career slam had Rafael Nadal not lost his 4th round match to Robin Soderling in 2009. So far this is the only match that Nadal has ever lost at the French Open, and that was the year Roger got his French title. Andre Agassi managed a career slam, but only won The French Open and Wimbledon once. In addition, Nadal is the only other owner of a career slam on the men’s side in the open era. In addition to Serena and Martina, Chris Event has a career slam as does Maria Sharapova who has only won for grand slams, but managed to win one of each for her career slam.
  • In golf, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods have won at least three of each, which puts them in their own category. Gary Player, Ben Hogan, and Gene Sarazen have won all four, but none have one two of each. In women’s golf, seven players have career slams, but the situation is more complicated as the identify of the majors has changes several times over the years. None the less, here are the lady slammers: Kerry Webb, Mickey Wright, Louise Suggs, Juli Inkster, Pat Bradley, and Annika Sörenstam.
