The Internet: Sum of Human Knowledge, or Collection of Scams? by Christine Maddox

Protecting Yourself from Scams

  • Regardless of the content, there are many scams intermingled in the material on the Internet. Although there are legitimate businesses that will put you in touch with viable information, many of them simply charge you for the convenience of using Google’s search engine. For the most part, websites that want to sell you information regarding a certain niche have done nothing more than spend an hour or two searching Google and other various engines for the same information. Some of these businesses could be considered “grey” since they did in fact provide a service to you – albeit something you could have done yourself in an hour. For instance, one organization on the Internet will charge you $120 to file a corporate Federal Employee Information Number (FEIN) from the IRS, something you can easily do for free in less than five minutes.
