Three Ways to Use the Books

  • Tom has intentionally created these books for multiple audiences. The first is for people taking preservice science methods courses. Individually, the books can supplement or collectively serve as substitute for other methods texts that convey information about constructivist teaching. The activities would be valuable for instructor-led, inquiry-based model lessons or student-presented micro teaching and for fieldwork experiences.
  • The next audience are Grade 5-12 Science Classes. Rather than serving merely as a source of neat activities, the books are designed to allow teachers to examine their own activities in order to increase their inquiry potential and to connect them to big ideas and scientific habits of mind. Teachers will no doubt engage in personal learning as they update their pedagogy on the job.
  • Finally, teachers of all ages and skills can use the books as part of inservice development. Ideally the teachers will experience activities live before reading the book. Even if you use them for self-study, you can still do the activities before you read the answers at the end. Tom includes separate procedures for working with students and adults.
