Linchpin: Are You Indispensable? by Seth Godin

Thinking About Your Choice

  • A great school experience won’t keep you from being remarkable, but it’s usually not enough to guarantee that you will become so. Great teachers are wonderful, but schools are organized to stamp them out with standard expectations. The American dream has changed from show up and follow instructions to being rewarded to create art, make judgement calls, and connect with people and ideas. You need to be flexible in the face of change, and resilient in the face of confusion. It use to be that doing a job that wasn’t yours was dangerous. For a linchpin, doing a job that’s not getting done is essential. You want people who can exercise good judgement rather than trying to give them rules to follow for every contingency.
